“The
Lenten worship is...a school of repentance. It teaches us what is repentance
and how to acquire the spirit of repentance. It prepares us for and leads
us to the spiritual regeneration without which ‘absolution’ remains meaningless.
It is, in short, both teaching about repentance and the way of repentance.
And since there can be no real Christian life without repentance, without
this constant ‘re-evaluation’ of life, the Lenten worship is an essential
part of the liturgical tradition of the Church.”
— Protopresbyter
Alexander Schmemann

Holy
Week Meditation and Study Guide - By
Father Andrew Demotses, rector of St.
Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody, MA. The web page begins:
"The services of Holy Week transform us into eyewitnesses and direct
participants in the awesome events of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus
Christ. In readings taken from both Old and New Testaments, in hymns,
processions, and liturgical commemoration, we see the fulfillment of the
Messianic prophicies, and the mighty acts by which God Himself, in the person
of Jesus Christ, grants us forgiveness for our sin, and rescues us from the
pain of eternal death."

The
Great Canon of St Andrew of Crete - The text of the Great
Canon is here presented in a formatted version, with complete rubrics for
use in services. Scriptural references are also provided in parentheses,
following the individual troparia. The Great Canon is one of the great
works, if not the great work, of the Church's "hymnography of repentance."
The Canon brings each of us into the story of Scripture; stirs us with
moving imagery to realize the depths of our sin. We begin to see our exile,
our distance from Christ; and from that distance, we begin to repent.
